Car Archiving#96

H

It would be useful to be able to archive cars in the garage. For example if a car is sold or written off, being able to mark it as such and have it appear elsewhere perhaps as a separate tab called “Past Cars” in the garage, with all others under “Current Cars”

Excellent thank you, looks great. Just curious, how would handover work? I’m guessing it will allow you to send an email invite to Custodian and that new user then can take control of the record going forward? Does this mean you would lose access to it entirely?

The way handover is currently planned to work is as follows:

  • You decide you want to handover your car.
  • You can search for an existing Custodian user (by username) and/or invite someone via email to ‘claim’ their car’s digital history by signing up (when you confirm the handover).
  • When you create the handover you choose what information you currently have attached to your car that you would like to pass to the other user.
  • When you confirm you are handing over the vehicle, we create a copy of all the data which you have agreed to handover to the new user and attach that car to their Custodian garage (or in a holding state for them to claim with a new Custodian account with authentication in the email they are sent).
  • We then archive (using this archiving system) your car so you can see your car in the previously owned section of your garage going foward.
  • You’d not have control or visibility of anything new added by the new owner.

In short we expect users when they handover their keys, they also handover their car on Custodian.

Regarding how much you can change about an archived car, we’ve not yet fully decided. The current thought is that we’d let people add new content to the car (if they found some old photos or something after it was archived) but they’d not be allowed to edit any of the existing information. As said though, this decision isn’t finalised yet though.

We’ll likely launch it in a ‘read only’ state and then decide based on user feedback. There are many positives and negatives to both sides of allowing people to edit cars in their previously owned section or not.

Hope that makes it a bit clearer.
